Alternative Contraceptives

Regular or daily contraceptive pills are a popular choice for contraception (prevention of unwanted pregnancy). However, they are not the only option. So, if you are tired of taking regular pills or do not like your current contraceptive method, you might find the alternative hormonal contraceptives more suitable for your contraception needs.

Some popular alternative contraceptive options may include vaginal rings or patches that contain the same hormones (estrogen and progesterone) as the regular contraceptives. But they work slightly differently from regular pills and don't require daily usage.

More Information

Alternative contraceptives are contraception options besides the standard contraceptive pills. Alternative contraceptives can be both hormonal and non-hormonal. Some of the popular alternative contraceptive options may include vaginal rings (such as NuvaRing) and contraceptive patches (like Evra patch. They are both hormonal alternative contraceptives that contain estrogen and progesterone- the same hormones found in regular contraceptive pills.

These alternative contraceptives usually work by -

  • Preventing ovulation or the release of the egg.
  • Thickening the cervical mucus. As a result, it makes it hard for the sperm to reach the eggs and fertilize them.
  • They can also thicken the womb lining to prevent the fertilized eggs from getting implanted.
  • Both vaginal rings and hormonal contraceptive patches can be 99% effective if used diligently.

The use of different alternative contraceptives is different and mostly comes with instructions on the pack. Here are the steps to use vaginal rings and contraceptive patches-

  • Gently squeeze the ring and insert it in the vagina, more likely the way you insert a tampon.
  • Leave it in its place for 21 continuous days and then take it out for a 7-day break.
  • During this break, you will usually have your period.
  • After the 7-day break, insert a new ring following the same process for continuous protection.

  • Stick the patch on clean and dry skin, specifically on the buttocks, upper arm, lower abdomen, or upper back.
  • Wear it for 7 days and then change it once a week for 3 weeks.
  • For the fourth week, go 7-day patch-free during periods and again continue with the same.

Using alternative contraceptives is ideal for women who-

  • Don't want regular pills
  • Prefer hassle-free maintenance methods.
  • Need reliable contraception without regular applications.
